Geographic Township of Derby, now Township of Georgian Bluffs
These five properties form part of the Long Swamp Class 1 Wetland, located within the Pottawatomi River watershed. Known for their exceptional wildlife habitat, these areas are being further enhanced through the volunteer efforts of the Sydenham Sportsmen's Association. Planned activities include thinning a plantation of evergreens to promote the growth of ground cover plants and encourage the development of second-growth trees.
The area is critical for supporting a winter deer yard, which will benefit from the planting of cedar trees and clover in open spaces. With its diverse lowlands and uplands, the complex provides varied habitats for both resident and migratory wildlife. There is an adjacent property, the Kelly Mothersell Wildlife Area, that shares a similar purpose.
