Gerald M. Hilchey Memorial Conservation Area
Concession 6, Part Lot 29
89.6 acres
Township of Sullivan, now Township of Chatsworth
This property is dedicated to the memory of Gerry Hilchey who was an active outdoorsman and passionate conservationist in the Owen Sound area prior to his passing. The property is located southern part of the geographic Township of Sullivan as part of the Kinghurst Swamp a provincially significant wetland and is designated as part of Kinghurst West, life science A.N.S.I. (Area of Natural and Scientific Interest).
This property was purchased in 2000 from Douglas and Lena Hokansson, who continue to own land nearby, and act as informal guardians of this sensitive environmental area. This wetland and retired agricultural fields support many resident and migratory species of wildlife. The retired agricultural fields have been registered as a Managed Forest Plan and were planted with 10,000 conifers in 2002 spaced with 12-foot centres.
The intent of this management plan is in 10 to 12 year forward to plant hardwoods interspersed in the conifers to provide wildlife habitat. The Foundation continues to work on the master plan for this property, which will enhance wildlife habitat and consider existing agricultural uses on surrounding lands.
